EXERCISE EXECUTIVE STRETCH, SA - May
Friday May 23rd 2008
On 23 May, Defence Reserves Support – South Australia held a one day Exercise Executive Stretch. This activity is designed to introduce business executives to the military environment, in an effort to increase support for Reservists and to create a greater understanding of how ADF Reservists may benefit their business.
All participants experienced activities highlighting the attributes of all three services. The Naval component consisted Boat Work and a Diving Demonstration, conducted by Dive Team 9 at the Birkenhead Training Facility. The Army aspect consisted of testimonials from a diverse gathering of Reservists who covered a large spectrum of service. This was followed by weapon demonstrations and a chance for the participants to handle the weapons and other equipment. This activity was an outstanding success and probably the highlight of the day. Participants also travelled to RAAF Base Edinburgh and under the control of the RAAF Physical Training Instructors conducted Abseiling Drills and completed the Confidence Course.
The feedback gained from all participants was extremely positive. They all agreed the activity had given them a clear insight into the benefits of the Australian Defence Force Reserve.

The action came hard and fast at RAAF Base Edinburgh at the weekend when two-dozen employers were put through their paces during Exercise Executive Stretch.
The three-day activity gave employers of Reservists a taste of what happens when their employees are training or on deployment with the Australian Defence Force. This year, Exercise Executive Stretch attracted employers from the private sector and Government, including higher education and local councils.
EES Director in South Australia Major Wendy Rydon said the participants ensured they got the most out of the exercise.
“Every one of them completed all of the tasks,” she said, pointing out that bosses aged from 23 to 63 took part. “They were fantastic and we didn’t take it easy on them. “They abseiled, went over an obstacle course, did live firing with Steyr rifles and slept under canvas for a night.
“The only complaint we received was that the ration packs could do with some improvement, but it does employers good to know the sorts of conditions and situations Reservists are placed in on deployment.”
Another Exercise Executive Stretch activity was drill, where the participants were taught to march, halt and about turn. Major Rydon said this element was an eye-opener for the bosses, many of whom said they had no idea how complex and difficult it was to march properly.
“One employer said to me they now have a much greater appreciation of what Reservists do,” she said.
“EES is an opportunity to show employers the training and professional development available to Reservists and how these skills can be transferred to their civilian workplaces.”
EES is conducted in all states and territories in conjunction with the Defence Reserves Support Council. To nominate for the next EES is your area or to learn more, contact the DRSC office in your state/territory.
