A touch of Bollywood in the form of Tania Zaetta has led to $85,000 being raised at this year's Australian Defence Force Charity Ball in Brisbane.
The glamour girl, a household name to Australian audiences for the past 15 years following the hit TV show Who Dares Wins and her recent appearance on Dancing with the Stars, encouraged the audience to open up their wallets and spend big during the event's fabulous charity auction.
Tania, the ball's gracious Master of Ceremonies, shared many stories with the audience, and even got into a tussle with some soldiers from Gallipoli Barracks and the Army's School of Administration and Health Military Unarmed Combat Training Team.
“It was an honour for me to be part of the Defence Force Ball in Brisbane. It gave me a chance to mix with many of you from the Army, Navy and Air Force,” said Tania.
“I've worked very closely with certain sections of the Defence Forces with some of the action training that I used to do on Who Dares Wins.
“People can’t believe all the action stunts I've done on my TV shows and in my films but it's nothing compared to the Australian Defence Force – you do it for real to save lives and protect our country. I have the utmost respect for all of you.”
Special guests Chief of the Defence Force (CDF), Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston and Head of Boeing Australia, David Withers, joined Tania, country singing sensation Beccy Cole and more than 550 ball-goers, all eager to help raise money for Legacy Queensland and the Starlight Children's Foundation.
CDF told the audience, filled with business leaders from throughout south east Queensland, about the important work Defence personnel were carrying out both in Australia and overseas. He also congratulated Major General Richard Wilson, AM Commander 1st Division and his Ball committee for their commitment to raising money for charity.
One of the other highlights was a speech by Legacy's Events Coordinator Mr Ben Cox.
The 28-year-old moved the audience with his story of a young boy whose father died as a result of service in Vietnam and then shortly after lost his mother to illness.
He spoke of how the boy's "Legatee" taught him so many things, even how to shave. He then stunned the audience by telling them he was that boy.
Jayne Kidd of e-Kiddna Event Management, who has helped organise the ball for the past two years, said this year's event had exceeded expectations.
"We were proud and thrilled that our guest numbers had increased by 200!” said Ms Kidd.
“We particularly noticed a high number of repeat guests from last year.
“The demographics of our guests were approximately 60 per cent Defence personnel to 40 per cent corporate guests and both audiences got a real buzz and sense of pride with the night's lead-up of military entertainment and displays.”
She said the ball would not have been possible without the support of Boeing, Thomas & Coffey, Defence Reserves Support, the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, TAE, Frontline Defence Services and Victoria Bitter Midstrength Lager.
Next year's ball will be held on Saturday 19 July at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
