James Cook University to support Student Reservists

Perth's Air Force Reserve Squadron receives National Award
Perth’s Air Force Reserve unit, No. 25 (City of Perth) Squadron, will receive national recognition on Saturday 8 September, when the National Vice President of the Air Force Association, Mr Peter Fardon, presents the prestigious Air Force Association Trophy to the Squadron. The Governor of Western Australia, His Excellency Dr Ken Micheal AC, will review the parade. The presentation parade, will take place at RAAF Base Pearce, Bullsbrook at 1:40 pm.

Major General Melick becomes Australia's most senior Reservist
Major General Greg Melick, AM, RFD, S.C. has been appointed Assistant Chief of the Defence Force (Reserves) and Head Reserve Policy. He succeeds Major General Neil Wilson, AM, RFD who has retired from the ADF after more than 40 years of service.

Health Professionals' Business Functions To Boost ADF Capability
The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence, Peter Lindsay MP, has called on health care professionals to consider part-time careers in the Australian Defence Force(ADF).
In Brisbane, at the first of a series of Australia-wide business functions for Health Professionals, Mr Lindsay said medical, nursing and allied health personnel were greatly needed in the ADF.
Mr Lindsay told representatives from major Queensland hospitals, specialist health care facilities and private practices that Health Professionals who signed up for Reserve service would gain a variety of medical experience unparalleled in civilian practice.

Increase in financial assistance for Employers
Employers of Defence Reservists who claim financial assistance through the Employer Support Payment Scheme will receive more money after 1 July.
Employer Support Payments (ESPs) will rise from $1,035.90 to $1,070.40, for every week full-time employee Reservists are away from their civilian jobs, once the qualifying period of two weeks and other eligibility criteria are satisfied.

Major review of Defence Reserves legislation announced
Defence will conduct a major review of the legislation designed to protect Reservists, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence, Mr Peter Lindsay MP announced today.
The Defence Reserve Service (Protection) Act 2001 is designed to allow the men and women who serve in Australia’s Navy, Army and Air Force Reserves to enjoy appropriate levels of protection in their civilian occupations without burdening employers with unnecessary compliance.
